Not all products are available for sale in all territories. Shigella sonnei bacteria, which were cultured on xylose-lysine-deoxycholate (XLD) agar medium, for a 48-hour time period, at a temperature of 37C. This media is tested according to ISO 11133-2 and is recommended in the ISO 6579 for testing of Salmonella. It will enhance the growth of many bacteria and it is incorporated into a wide range of culture media as a solid. Lab-Lemco is a meat extract made from specially selected raw materials, adjusted to neutrality, and dried to a fine powder. Some Salmonella and all Shigella are non-motile. Composition of Deoxycholate Citrate Agar (DCA) Peptone provides carbon, nitrogen, vitamins, and minerals. XLD (Xylose Lysine Desoxycholate) Agar is used mainly for the isolation of Salmonella and Shigella in food products. XLD Agar (Xylose Lysine Deoxycholate Agar) is a moderately selective differential medium used for the isolation and differentiation of enteric gram-negative. ![]() Salmonella and Shigella are aerobic, gram-negative, oxidase-negative bacilli. Xylose Lysine Deoxycholate agar ( XLD agar) is a selective growth medium used in the isolation of Salmonella and Shigella species from clinical samples and from food. A relatively small number of organisms ingested is capable of causing symptomatic infection. Isolate and identify Salmonella and Shigella spp. Salmonella and Shigella are major causes of bacterial enteric illness with transmission occuring via the fecal-oral route, person-to-person contact, or by the ingestion of contaminated food or water. ![]() XLD Agar is recommended in the ISO 6579 testing of Salmonella and is tested according to ISO 11133-2. ![]() The recovery of salmonellae and shigellae is not obscured by profuse growth of other species therefore, XLD Agar is ideal for the screening of samples containing mixed flora and suspected of harbouring enteric pathogens, e.g., medical specimens or food products. The sensitivity and selectivity of XLD Agar exceeds that of traditional plating media, e.g., Eosin Methylene Blue and Bismuth Sulphite agars, which tend to suppress the growth of shigellae. XLD Agar is a selective media for the isolation and differentiation of Salmonella, relying on xylose fermentation, lysine decarboxylation and production of hydrogen sulfide for the primary differentiation of Shigella and Salmonella spp. ![]()
